New York’s Martin Act Protects Investors

In New York, the Investor Protection Bureau of the Office of the Attorney General has responsibility for enforcing the New York State securities law, or Martin Act. The Act enables the Attorney General to investigate suspected fraud that relates to securities sales and purchases.

The Martin Act also empowers the Attorney General to prosecute industry professionals who violate the law. The Attorney General’s Office adds that its Investor Protection Bureau “protects the public from fraud by requiring brokers, dealers, securities salespersons and investment advisers to register with the Attorney General’s Office.”
