Identity Theft

In the U.S., identity theft is the leading consumer complaint reported by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC defines identity theft as occurring “when someone uses your personally identifying information, like your name, Social Security number, or credit card number, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes.” According to the agency, about 9 million people nationwide can expect to have their identities stolen this year.

● Annual identify theft complaints total 278,078.
● Complaints of identity theft comprise 21% of the 1.3 million consumer complaints per year.
● About three out of four complainants report identity theft to law enforcement agencies.
● Credit card fraud is the leading form of identity theft
● Fraud involving government benefits or documents accounts for 16% of identity theft complaints.
● Florida, Arizona, and Texas lead the nation in per capita rates of reported identity thefts.
