                                                __Discrimination

A number of federal laws prohibit discrimination against specified groups of people in the U.S.  Adding to that legal basis, New York is among the  most progressive of states when it comes to the insistence that every citizen be treated with “an equal opportunity to enjoy a full and productive life,” as the state’s Division of Human Rights explains. Our laws prohibit discrimination in a variety of circumstances, from employment to housing to credit transactions. If you encounter discrimination at work or elsewhere, contact a qualified civil rights attorney for advice about your rights. Similarly, if you are a business owner whose company has been threatened with a discrimination lawsuit, you’ll need accurate legal advice.

                                                New York Fights Discrimination

The State of New York has taken decisive steps to see that its citizens have recourse when they encounter discrimination on the basis of:

                                                   ● National origin
                                                   ● Race and color
                                                   ● Creed
                                                   ● Sex
                                                   ● Age
                                                   ● Disability
                                                   ● Marital status
                                                   ● Sexual orientation
                                                   ● Familial status
                                                   ● Military status
                                                   ● Arrest/conviction record
                                                   ● Status as a victim of domestic violence
                                                   ● Predisposing genetic characteristics

In New York, laws prohibit discrimination because of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status and other factors. The state has charged its Division of Human Rights with investigating and enforcing discrimination complaints. The agency also acts as a source of educational information aimed at preventing discrimination.
