                                                In New York, the state’s Division of Corporations, State Records and Uniform Commercial Code “files and maintains documents relating to business corporations, not-for-profit corporations and other business entities that either are formed under the laws of New York State or are authorized to do business under state law.”

                                                Responsibilities of the Division include “filing and maintaining numerous documents vital to New York state government, such as local laws, oaths of office and trademarks; it authenticates documents and issues apostilles for use in a foreign country; and it maintains records on financial obligations incurred by individuals and business.”

                                                According to the Division, there are more than 1.8 million business entities on file with the state. These range in size from one employee, to corporations with workforces numbering in the tens of thousands.
